First smartphones vs actual smartphones

Smartphone market

As predicted, the beginning of 2019 has brought us the first foldable phones that will powerfully hit the market. The new Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X seem to open the horizon of a future of flexible screens for which many other manufacturers are preparing. But will it really be the foldable future?

As we say, it didn’t go beyond concept. The developments of foldable and flexible devices were developed during a great era at the University. There, the Human Media Lab research group in Ontario, Canada, was the first to develop what we could consider the first ‘fold’ phone in 2010. Its name was Paper Phone, and it was another e-ink based device that could fold almost like the pages of a book as we interacted with it.

So far, however, all were prototypes and ideas that drank more from electronic paper than from a screen itself. The arrival of the flexible, or rather the curved, began to be glimpsed with OLED panels from LG and Samsung.

What were cell phones like then and now?

As the years went by, cell phones were designed smaller and smaller and had more differentiating features. They launched colored cell phones, with a cover, antennas disappeared, some had independent numeric keypads, others did not, and so on, until we reached what we know today as smartphones.

When did smartphones start to be used?

The “Nokia 9000 Communicator” had the features of a desktop computer: office software, Internet and fax. Sales began on August 15, 1996.

When did cell phones begin to be used on a massive scale?

For example: April 3, 1973 changed the world, and not because of the fall of the Berlin Wall or because man landed on the moon. This was the day when the global telecommunications market changed thanks to the introduction of the first cell phone.

A market with 118.4 million active devices, with a replacement frequency of 24 months, generates an important attraction for the incursion and diversification in the supply of devices by equipment manufacturers, in order to increase their market footprint.

The Mexican smartphone market has radically changed its configuration since the entry of the first devices in 2008. In this first stage, there were few companies with the innovation capacity to offer these devices, so BlackBerry and Nokia had a market share of three out of every four devices sold in the country, while Apple established itself as a niche company for high-end users.

Apple, the Cupertino-based manufacturer that started the smartphone era, has 11.8% of the market. This is due to its focus on users with high purchasing power and brand loyalty, with an offer focused on high-end devices in the market, which represents a disadvantage for the Mexican market, since a large proportion of users cannot afford to buy one of these devices.

The Blackberry is probably the first smartphone you remember. It had a camera, audio and video player, email, navigation and even had an instant messaging application called Blackberry Messenger, which worked only between Blackberry users through a PIN.

The history of cell phones split in two in 2007 when Apple introduced the iPhone, a smartphone with a touch screen that only had one button, a camera, Bluetooth, 4, 8 and 16 GB storage capacity, the possibility of synchronization with iTunes, dimensions of 115 x 61 x 11.6 mm and 135g in weight.

On the other hand, smartphones have a fingerprint reader that improves the security and privacy of the user due to the amount of information stored in them such as contacts, emails, credit cards, among others.
